1993 Volkswagen Rallye Golf 3 A59 Makes Grand Debut at 2022 SEMA

Surrounding the newly redesigned VW Jetta GLI, the 1990s Golf marveled at the 2022 SEMA auto show. Yet, this specific Golf is unlike any of its hatchback brethren. The distinctive Volkswagen Golf premiers protruding wheel arches and a hood that appears as if someone pierced it with a series of hole punchers. The 1993 VW Rallye Golf 3 A59 prototype is a sight for sore eyes. The German automaker’s prototype was originally a homologation (granted official approval to compete) for the 1994 World Rally Championship. Regrettably, the VW hot hatch never contended, but one look at the Golf and enthusiasts understand Volkswagen suppressed a beast.

The VW Rallye Golf prototype growled to life with assistance from Schmidt Motorsport, a German firm. In addition, Schmidt Motorsport constructed the fierce Mk 3 Golf with a specially developed engine, modified suspension, and busty frame. Inside the Rallye prototype is a turbocharged all-aluminum 2.0-liter inline-four yielding 275 HP and 273 pound-ft of torque. The most potent Golf GTI of the A59 prototype’s era hardly delivered 175 HP. Further, a six-speed manual transmission thrusts all four wheels via a variable center differential.

The Golf A59 wears 16-inch five-spoke Speedline wheels with 225/45R16 tires. In addition, the performance tires are connected to a front strut suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers, broader control arms, and a multilink rear suspension with Bilstein struts. Furthermore, the Volkswagen A59 model’s Brembo brakes with cross-drilled discs come in handy for those firm stops.

The Rallye Golf hatchback premiers exterior body panels blanketed in Kevlar and carbon fiber. Additionally, the VW hatchback reveals a sophisticated front bumper, side skirts, rear spoiler, toned wheel arches, and a wider rear bumper to obscure those quad exhaust pipes, and the aesthetic is diabolically genius. Now, back to the punching cutouts on the hood, another stroke of genius from the innovative automakers as the wholes improve cooling. Moreover, the Volkswagen A59 reveals a three-spoke steering wheel, Recari seats, and a digital dashboard.

If the VW Rallye A59 prototype ever confronted the racetrack, the German automaker would need to produce 2500 models of the hatchback for others to enjoy. Sadly, the project was deserted, which means there is only one way to witness the prestigious Golf A59. Fortunately, the Volkswagen powertrain lives on in the past Golf Rallye, recording class victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
