Volkswagen announced significant advancements in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure during a press release on December 15, 2021. The manufacturer is introducing “We Charge,” a comprehensive ecosystem designed to simplify and enhance the EV charging experience for customers. The innovation provides charging alternatives for home and mobile charging, new functions for the ID models, and two-way charging.

“The across-the-board enhancement of the charging infrastructure is decisive for accelerating the ramp-up of the electric mobility campaign. Charging must become simpler and easier to integrate into daily activities. With the new software in our ID. Models along with solutions like Plug & Charge, we as a manufacturer are making a decisive contribution to realizing those goals.”

–Silke Bagschik, Volkswagen’s Head of Marketing and Sales for E-mobility

What are the Key Features of the “We Charge” Ecosystem?

  • Increased Performance and Convenience:

“We Charge” offers an ideal charging experience with higher performance, greater convenience, and enhanced sustainability.

  • Comprehensive Charging Solutions:

The ecosystem provides a range of charging options, including home charging, mobile charging, and access to a vast network of public charging stations.

  • Plug & Charge Technology:

Volkswagen’s ID. models now support Plug & Charge technology, enabling seamless and automatic charging at compatible fast charging stations.

  • Home Energy Management:

The integrated Home Energy Management System (HEMS) optimizes home charging by utilizing lower electricity rates and maximizing the benefits of renewable energy sources.

  • Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Technology:

V2G technology allows EVs to not only charge from the grid but also feed electricity back into the grid, enabling grid balancing and potential revenue streams for owners.

  • Enhanced Route Planning:

The new operating system features improved route planning capabilities, including multi-stop routes, real-time traffic data, and charging station availability and occupancy information.

“Our goal is to ensure that an electric vehicle is capable of being a customer’s primary car without any compromises. That is why we are building a complete charging ecosystem, with residential charging solutions and a rapid expansion of the fast charging infrastructure as well as competent advice, comprehensive charging tariffs, and the right fleet solutions for business customers.”

–Elke Temme, Volkswagen’s Head of Charging and Energy Business Division at Group Components

“We Charge” is a pivotal step in Volkswagen’s pledge to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility. By simplifying the charging process and expanding access to charging infrastructure, Volkswagen aims to make owning and driving an electric vehicle a seamless and enjoyable experience for customers. Volkswagen has ambitious goals but not impractical ones. No one can ever discredit Volkswagen’s initiative as anything other than a full-fledged commitment to the evolution of a cleaner tomorrow.
