Volkswagen Considers Making an All-Electric Pick-Up Truck

Tarok Truck Concept

Volkswagen is not known for designing pickup trucks. Instead, the company focuses on sedans and family SUVs. However, a rumor suggests the VW Tarok truck concept is an active template for a fully electric pickup truck in the near future. This initiative places Volkswagen in an optimal place to compete in the EV truck segment with other automakers. The benefits of an all-electric pick-up truck are plenty, such as instant acceleration and more driving range, eliminating the need to fill up at the gas pump.

Volkswagen Electric Pick-Up Truck

The Tarok concept has truck fans excited about an electric version of a pickup truck rather than having another gasoline-powered vehicle. As Volkswagen gradually electrifies its lineup of vehicles, an electric pickup truck makes sense to diversify its offering rather than just offering sedans and SUVs. A third vehicle class such as an electric pickup truck opens the opportunity for Volkswagen to increase its sales. Volkswagen’s first all-electric production vehicle is the ID.4 SUV. It’s not too far-fetched to say that an all-electric pickup will soon follow.

Capturing the North American Market

Volkswagen is currently in the planning and development stage when it comes to engineering a battery-powered pickup truck. The company’s plans include offering a production-ready truck in the North American market and selling it at scale while keeping affordability in mind. As automakers jump on the EV truck bandwagon, Volkswagen is planning on doing the same to stay competitive. The emerging gasoline-free truck trend is becoming popular in the United States with Ford and GMC being at the forefront releasing their own truck models such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Ford Maverick, and the GMC Hummer Truck EV. The German automaker has its eyes set on gaining market share from America’s top truck-making brands to showcase its own truck-making potential. Volkswagen’s strategy involves electrifying its line-up of family SUVs and pick-up trucks are next on the list.

Volkswagen’s MEB platform

Volkswagen’s MEB platform, also known as a “Modular Electrification Toolkit,” is suitable for a light-duty and even a mid-size EV pickup truck. MEB is a modular system for manufacturing electric vehicles that Volkswagen patented and has plans to use on future electric vehicles. This includes using it on a potential gasoline-free pickup truck and battery-powered SUVs. The platform involves the way Volkswagen engineers battery fuel cells and the electric systems in their vehicles.
