Volkswagen Amarok Pickup Truck Could Soon Be Sold in the United States
Although Volkswagen is not known for making trucks, the German automaker stepped into the truck segment with its Amarok pickup truck back in 2010 when it was first introduced in Europe, South America, and Africa. For the 2022 model year, the Amarok returns in an all-new futuristic design in concept form (pre-production) set to release sometime next year. The Amarok is categorized as a mid-sized pickup truck and will be based on the Ford Ranger platform, which hints at a partnership between Ford and Volkswagen.
All-New 2022 VW Amarok Truck
Volkswagen’s Amarok pickup truck was never offered in the U.S. market, but it did sell well in other markets worldwide, which motivated the German automaker to sell the truck in the United States. A recent trademark filing to protect the “Amarok” name by Volkswagen hints at the automaker’s intentions to sell the vehicle to American consumers. The initiative is supported via a partnership between Volkswagen and Ford, which makes the idea all the more real for VW as the truck could be sold in the United States in the foreseeable future.
The new Amarok has a dual-cabin design and features a body-on-frame architecture related to the Ford Bronco to some degree. It’s not confirmed yet, but there can be several powertrain options in gasoline, hybrid, or all-electric configurations. Volkswagen could get some ideas from Ford’s portfolio of engine options, such as the 2.3 L Turbo 4-cylinder and even the 2.7 L Turbo V6. But we also expect to see diesel engine options for markets outside the U.S that can be incorporated into the Amarok as well.
The Ford and Volkswagen Partnership
When it comes to brainstorming new ideas and turning challenging projects into reality, two heads are better than one. Thanks to the recent partnership between Volkswagen and Ford, the next-generation Amarok could most likely end up being sold in North America. The Ford-VW partnership will produce Ford-branded electric vehicles using Volkswagen’s MEB architecture. By the same token, Volkswagen will utilize Ford’s mid-size pickup truck platform/chassis for its Amarok truck.
A Next-Generation Truck
Volkswagen promises the next-generation Amarok will be more than just a re-badged Ranger with different body styling. There are also rumors by automotive news sources that suggest the new Amarok will use either a 2.0- L TwinTurbo or a 3.0 L Turbo Diesel. As the 2021 calendar year progresses, we can expect more information to be released in the coming months.
