VW Says the Beetle Isn’t Returning, but Iconic EVs Are on the Way

The Beetle’s time in the limelight has come and gone, says CEO Thomas Schäfer.

Rumors about a revived Volkswagen Beetle for the electric generation have been circulating the internet for years. The Wolfsburg-based automaker discontinued the Beetle in 2019, and there hasn’t been a direct successor. Apparently, an electric-powered Beetle isn’t currently under consideration. Considering automakers are using this significant moment of bloom for EVs creation as a way to reintroduce a few beloved names and concepts, there was certainly lots of affection surrounding the Beetle for a very long time. That being said, it seems that CEO Thomas Schäfer has dropped some facts about if the beloved Beetle might be coming back or if it will be only remembered in the past.

Thomas Schäfer revealed in an interview with  Autocar about the third-generation Tiguan that it’s unwise to hold out for a third new Beetle. When Asked if the Volkswagen Beetle, one of the company’s world’s longest-serving nameplates, should make a comeback primarily based totally on these strict criteria, he stated, “I don’t think so, because there are certain vehicles that have had their day. It wouldn’t make sense to bring it back.”

“I wouldn’t say with 100 percent [certainty]. But from where I stand now, I wouldn’t consider it. It’s the same as Scirocco: it had its day, then there was a new model based on a reinterpretation. To do that again? I don’t think so. And going forward with balancing all these technologies and the cost that is associated with it, you’ve got to invest money in the best possible place.”

Schafer’s predecessor at VW’s helm Herbert Diess was open to the concept of an MEB-based Beetle for the brand-new decade. In February 2022, he admitted, “many other emotional cars are possible on our scalable MEB platform” when asked about the future of the brand’s historic nameplates. Also, Volkswagen trademarked the e-Beetle name in Europe some years in the past; however, it seems the company’s approach in the EV section has been modified due to the arrival of Schafer.

Volkswagen moved 36,421 New Beetles in the U.S. in 2007, consistent with information from CarFigures. In 2011, the first year of the last-gen Beetle, VW sold 43,134. By the very last complete year of manufacturing in 2018, that number sank back down to 14,411. The Beetle has many that loved it when it was out and will continue to be loved even though it has become clear that it will not be coming back anytime soon. Though it will not happen now, it is not fully out of the picture; there is still a chance that it can make a comeback one day. Electric vehicles are expensive to make now; however, they may not be in the future.  And when that day comes, it’d seem like a pretty easy win for Volkswagen to make an ID.Golf with a familiar retro hat like the Beetle, or just bring the Beetle back for a new era.
