Volkswagen Upgrades In-Car Voice Assistant for a More Engaging Driving Experience
By incorporating new advanced technology, Volkswagen has made its in-car voice assistant “smarter” and more engaging. This enhancement, announced at the CES technology show, is now available across many Volkswagen models, including the newest Jettas and electric vehicles.
Instead of completely redesigning its existing system, Volkswagen has improved its voice assistant, Ida, by collaborating with Cerence, a company specializing in voice technology. Now, Volkswagen’s assistant can do more than just handle basic tasks like navigation or temperature adjustment. This new upgrade allows drivers to ask for local entertainment suggestions or even play a trivia game while keeping their hands on the wheel.
The new version of the voice assistant offers a more user-friendly experience. Drivers can activate it simply by saying “Hello IDA” or “Hello Volkswagen,” depending on the model. If IDA has no immediate answer, it connects to a network that searches multiple databases to find the information. This capability makes the assistant more helpful and responsive, enhancing safety and enjoyment during the drive.
Volkswagen also takes privacy seriously, ensuring that the AI does not access sensitive vehicle data and deletes all interaction data immediately after use. For most 2025 Volkswagen models, this enhanced voice assistant will be a free trial, although some models may require a subscription.
While voice assistants are becoming common in modern cars, Volkswagen’s new assistant, powered by this advanced technology, aims to provide a more natural and meaningful conversation experience while driving. Although other carmakers, like Mercedes-Benz, are testing similar features, Volkswagen’s early adoption may give it an edge in appealing to tech-savvy customers.
Kai Grünitz, a member of Volkswagen’s management, emphasized the company’s goal of making advanced technologies widely available. “By adding this new technology to our voice assistant, we’re providing drivers with the chance to use cutting-edge AI every day, demonstrating how innovative our products are,” Grünitz said.
