Volkswagen ID. Buzz gets The Option Of Roof-Mounted Solar Panels from ABT

April 12th, 2023 by

The new Volkswagen ID. Buzz option with solar panels will be the best upgrade for those looking to gain a couple of extra miles and charge all their devices for all outdoor fun.

Volkswagen ID. Buzz

The company’s e-Line department revealed solar panels for the Volkswagen ID Buzz, a roof-mounted solar panel setup designed to increase the electric van’s driving range and power equipment while camping. Deliveries to Europe of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz have started. It looks almost like a giant sunroof; at least, that’s what it looks like in images. The ABT states that the integration of the solar panels into Buzz’s roof, which isn’t completely flat, was complicated.

The panels are mounted on the roof of the VW ID. Buzz can produce up to 600 Watts of energy at its peak. The solar panels can send power to the battery packs regardless of whether the van is parked or driving. In the right conditions, it can save up to approximately 1,850 miles of range annually. Folks planning on exploring England in their Buzz will likely see a much lower figure. ABT plans on adding additional modules on the sides of the electric vehicles, increasing the output to over 1,000 Watts. Over in Europe, ID. Buzz has a rear-mounted, 204-horsepower electric motor that draws electricity from an 82-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. During testing on the WLTP cycle, its driving range checks in at up to 258 miles. This version of the ID. Buzz will not be the one that we will see here in the United States. Volkswagen still needs to reveal what the United States version will look like.

The ABT e-Line solar roof makes an excellent case for camping. ID. Buzz offers more space for solar panels on its stretched roof. Allowing the van to power up by the sun and power things like interior lighting, laptop, tablet, fridge, and other appliances, saving battery juice for actual driving. ABT’s solar panels will be an excellent fit for the upcoming ID. Buzz California. The commercial versions of the ID. Buzz Cargo can benefit from this technology as well. The panels can power a refrigerator, making transporting perishable goods easier.

ABT’s roof-mounted solar panel setup is scheduled to enter production in early 2024—the European version of the ID. Buzz has two rows of seats that can seat five people. It has two-toned colors for the exterior paint, and it has a more square box-like look to it. Five two-toned colors are available: Lime Yellow, Starlight Blue, Energetic Orange, Bay Leaf Green, and Deep Black. The interior has the same kind of layout as other ID models, and the cargo area is very spacious. We are sure to see some of these elements in the U.S. version.
