Volkswagen, the German automotive giant company, has launched its ID Buzz all-electric van, which is an ode to the truly iconic hippie-era T1 Transporter. This update gives the one-of-a-kind T1 Transporter the chance to exist in a fully electric world through a new and improved version, thanks to the ID Buzz van. The T1 was first launched back in the 1950s and became an icon of the hippie movement during the 1960s and the 1970s, so it was often known as the kombi, campervan, or “Bulli.” The ID Buzz, which is now available to order in Europe, pays homage to its historical counterpart through its features like the flat front with hardly any overhang and a V-shaped face that is adorned with an oversized VW logo. Along with the option for two-tone exterior paint colors, it truly does a great job of emphasizing the likeness to the T1.

Jozef Kabaň, the head of Volkswagen’s design, had this to say about the vehicle “The T1 was an icon of the 1950s. With the ID Buzz, we’re transferring its DNA into the age of electromobility. It’s conveying the icon’s genes and design elements into the digital age. And it is the proportions that make the ID Buzz so unique. In the T1, you are practically sitting on top of the front axle – there’s no front overhang. While providing everything of relevance to safety and technology, the ID Buzz has wonderfully short overhangs.” Currently, the ID Buzz is available in Europe with a 77kWh battery that can charge from five to eighty percent in just thirty minutes and a rear-mounted 150 kW electric motor.

The interior of the vehicle has an open, lounge-like concept that is capable of seating five people, which makes it a multipurpose vehicle/minivan rather than a microbus. It’s made with all non-animal materials as well! It can be expected that six and seven-seater options will follow soon. Volkswagen is encouraging buyers to view this space as a “mobile home office” or a “digital living room” thanks to some of its features like the optional folding tables o9n, the front seat backrests, and up to eight USB ports. Tomasz Bachorski said, “It was our goal to bring our customers’ home into the vehicle interior, and this in every aspect, from the materials to the digital equipment that you’re used to at home.”

The controls of the Buzz will include a multifunction steering wheel, a touch display with natural voice control, and an option to include 30-color adaptive interior ambient lighting. It will also include “Travel Assist with swarm data,” which is a function that facilitates partially automated driving as well as assisted lane-changing when on the highway. The ID Buzz will also make a debut as a Cargo model in the near future and is said to have two or three front seats that will be separated by a partition. It will also have 3.9 cubic meters of rear cargo space, which is enough to fit two European standard-sized pallets.
