Volkswagen Announces Electric GTI Concept
Volkswagen’s latest concept EV, the ID.GTI, was recently unveiled at the IAA auto show (September 5-10, 2023) in Munich, Germany. The sporty electric vehicle will launch in Europe, with rumors suggesting the automaker may also reach the United States. With the GTI branding, the concept highlights Volkswagen’s commitment to producing EVs and capturing the sustainable market in North America and Europe.
The Volkswagen ID.GTI Will Act as an Entry Level for the European Market
Recent reports suggest that Volkswagen designed the ID.GTI exclusively for the European market. The electric hatchback will be the automaker’s entry-level EV in Europe or a sportier variation of the ID.2. (released earlier this year, 2023). The German automaker unveiled the ID.2all concept, and the ID.GTI shares a similar base bodywork as the vanilla ID.2, suggesting that the automaker may assemble on the reimagined MEB Entry platform. The VW platform is a simpler and smaller version of its existing MEB architecture, using front-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive. Unfortunately, we are not sure when the ID.GTI will be available in the US.
The power figures for the VW ID.GTI have yet to be released. However, based on the 223 horsepower promised for the top-spec ID.2, we can assume that the ID.GTI will have at least as much power. The VW EV will feature an electronically controlled limited-slip differential to improve traction and dynamic modes, similar to the current gasoline-fired GTI. Moreover, the simulated sound system will be able to replicate the sounds of historic GTIs, including the 1976 Mk 1 and the 1986 Mk 2 16-valve version.
Interior Size and Comfort
The impending ID.GTI by Volkswagen may be smaller than the current Golf GTI, with a length of only 161.6 inches and a wheelbase of 102.4 inches. The length of the concept GTI is closer in size to the European Polo than to the current-generation Golf. However, the German automaker promised that despite the shorter overhangs and lack of a combustion engine up front, the passenger space in the ID.GTI will still be comparable to that of the gasoline-propelled Golf GTI.
The VW ID.GTI has a cool feature that lets enthusiasts switch the digital instrument display to a rendered version of the Mk 2 Golf GTI’s instrument pack. The EV’s dashboard also has a larger 12.9-inch screen in the center, and separate temperature and volume controls are back instead of the ID.4’s integration placed at the bottom of the touchscreen. Additionally, there’s a head-up display that projects performance data onto the full height of the screen for both the driver and front-seat passenger. However, it’s unlikely that the passenger will be able to view lap times as it’s not a feature VW will include in the road-legal ID.GTI.
The Volkswagen ID.2 will launch in Europe in 2026, followed by the ID.GTI in 2027. Both models will be produced in Spain, along with models from Skoda and Seat, and all vehicles will come to life on the MEB Entry platform. Enthusiasts hope the GTI EV will also be available in the US. However, there is still a long way to go before these releases, but it’s exciting to see what the future holds for Volkswagen’s electric lineup.
