A Legend Returns
Volkswagen has chosen to revive one of its most beloved vehicles as an electric vehicle that will be available for the 2026 model year. What vehicle is being brought back? It’s none other than the Volkswagen Scout SUV! Volkswagen recently acquired the rights to the name, and Scout may be a new stand-alone brand instead of being badged as a Volkswagen vehicle. Official teasers for this seem to lean toward an SUV and a pickup being developed. Here’s the information that has been released so far.
What We Know So Far
The original Scout SUV by International Harvester was discontinued in 1980 and has been waiting for its chance to exist in today’s vehicle market. With overlanding, retro nameplates, and off-roading trends garnering popularity, EVs are rapidly becoming more prevalent in the automotive industry. Along with upgrading battery materials for future EVs, interest in Scout was reestablished thanks to these prominent trends. Building a truck and an SUV allows Scout to position these automobiles well against more stable manufacturers like Jeep and Ford. Ford, which is also beginning to develop stand-alone dealers while adopting minimal Ford Badging, will have to stand firm against Volkswagen and its stand-alone brand.
Technical Specifications: A Focus on Off-Road Capability
Volkswagen at present has a two-motor all-wheel drive EV platform in production. In a release, the automotive giant claimed it plans to develop a “new technical platform concept” for its new “rugged” offerings. Though the automaker didn’t provide many details past this, it can be expected that there will be at least two motors for the front and rear of the vehicles. It’s possible to have three or four motors; however, Volkswagen executives have expressed their desire to keep the prices reasonable, which fans and car enthusiasts appreciate. For Volkswagen to surpass the competition, it must include:
- A locking rear differential
- Under-vehicle protection
- Long-travel suspension
- As much range as possible
- A solid capability to tow and haul gear
Volkswagen always does its best to ensure satisfaction, so fans can expect those characteristics to be present. The Scout SUV’s expected on-sale date is within the 2026 model year, with more updates to come!
