The VW ID.8 Officially Announced
On July 13th (2021) Volkswagen announced that they would be the first to release a sizable electric SUV. In addition, the Volkswagen Group announced several declarations on its new strategies during an EV presentation. Volkswagen is gambling on the future and doubling down on creating, generating, and retailing electric vehicles.  Â
Volkswagen Group Chairman of the Board of Management, Herbert Diess, logged onto LinkedIn to share the New Auto Strategy. But inconspicuously, on page 10, he confirmed the new Atlas-sized battery-powered sports utility vehicle. In addition, the larger-than-life vehicle declared the new ID.8 could potentially be based on the Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB). But that could be the anticipation talking. It’s too early for Volkswagen to drop any specific details.Â
With the VW ID.8, it’s clear that Volkswagen wants to grow the ID family. With the ID.3 at the forefront presented as the contemporary, zero-emission to the Golf. The ID.4 trailing behind as the step-cousin to the Tiguan. Also, the ID.6 is set to premiere with an appeal and body style similar to the Passat. The ID.8 will indeed become the largest electric vehicle thus far, set to debut as the electrified Atlas.Â
With the discontinuance of the Passat after the 2022 model, Volkswagen is transitioning in a whole new direction. That’s right, auf wiedersehen to the distribution of the Passat in the US. The end of the Passat production was never unexpected, as Volkswagen announced the phase-out earlier this year. It was in response to the midsize sedans losing significant ground to SUVs and crossovers for several years. If the VW ID.4  is any interpretation of what to anticipate then there’s a lot to look forward to.Â
“We’ve sold some version of the Passat for nearly 50 years, and the Passat launched our relationship with Chattanooga, which supports thousands of jobs. With the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport in high demand, and the North American production launch of the all-electric ID.4 SUV next year, our future in Chattanooga looks brighter than ever.” -President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America Scott Keogh.  Â
Again, Volkswagen hasn’t released too much information about what to expect. But the presentation of the ID.8 alludes to the vehicle becoming a global model. With all the ID models mentioned, the ID.Buzz is next to premiere, the Transporter alternative. Once the IDs are fully released, Volkswagen will have the most diversified electric vehicle portfolio within the industry thus far. The new IDs will help Volkswagen double down on being the industry’s leader in Electric Vehicles by 2025.Â
