So What Improvements Did Volkswagen Make to the ID.3?
The competition for the all-electric Volkswagen ID.3 is growing with the entry of new players in the market, such as the MG4 and the Renault Megane Electric. BYD will also launch its Dolphin and claim market share in the EV compact car segment. Despite this competition, the electric car has faced criticism, especially regarding materials and software. However, Volkswagen has listened to feedback and made improvements with the ID.3 model update earlier this spring (2023).
A New Eye-Catching Front Design
Volkswagen has introduced several changes to the modified ID.3 model to improve its aerodynamics. For instance, the narrow air intakes of the front bumper took on a new appeal, and the automaker updated the vertical openings to the air curtains for the sides. The electric radiator louver only opens when cooling air is needed, enhancing aerodynamics. The bonnet is now available entirely in the color of the car body, and the black element that used to transition to the windscreen has vanished. The ID.3’s changes have reduced the cW value from just under 0.27 to 0.263. However, this detail may not be noticeable in everyday life. Moreover, the rear lights of the car have also taken on some refinement to include red LEDs in the boot lid.
A Polished Interior
Volkswagen has taken customer feedback into account and made improvements to the interior of the ID.3 model. For instance, the use of sizable rigid plastic panels in the cockpit left a few enthusiasts a little disappointed, and the German automaker addressed the discrepancy by replacing the contourless basic seat and eliminating the simplest version of the center console. The visible elements on the doors and dashboard comprise foam material that looks and feels more upscale. Nonetheless, the ID.3 maintains its piano lacquer elements. The steering wheel has a new cover, but the touch controls remain. Yet, a new model update is apparently in the pipeline, so this could change sooner than later.
The VW ID.3 model now has a 12-inch display, an improvement from the previous 10-inch display. The infotainment system in the ID.4 has set a new standard, and Volkswagen has now implemented it in the ID.3. The slider for setting the temperature and volume below the display doesn’t illuminate. Still, VW may alter the interface with a Facelift 2.0 update next year (2024). The software version (3.5) that features the new ID.3 model implements several customer requests. For instance, the charging menu is now on the first level of the large touch display, and it’s structured in a more informative way. Don’t fret; the basic operating logic remains the same.
A Well Devised Planner for Charging Stops
The software update has also improved the route planner in the ID.3 model. Once the route is calculated, the system reveals a path that includes a charging stop and provides information about the total driving time, along with the exact time needed for the charging stop. However, VW only indicates the state of charge upon arrival via a battery icon rather than the percentage, which may be inconvenient.
The route planner in the ID.3 model includes the current traffic situation and forecast, including charging stops and the respective state of charge value. The selection of charging stations is superb, and the manual search for charging stations near or along the route was easy to use, with filtering options based on charging power and details such as the number of charging points and occupancy status.
From 0 to 80 Percent in 30 Minutes
The ID.3 Pro S test car can be charged 5 to 80 percent within 30 minutes at the fast charger, whether by card, app, or Plug&Charge. VW specifies a maximum DC charging power of 170 kW. Charging from 7 to 80 percent took 30.5 minutes, and charging from 10 to 50 percent took 13.5 minutes, which are impressive values.
