Volkswagen Introduces the ID.Life EV Concept
Volkswagen revealed the ID.Life EV Concept at the 2021 International Motor Show IAA Mobility in Munich, Germany. The concept vehicle is a compact electric ID.model that Volkswagen plans on selling in the European market in 2025 with a starting price of €20,000 (or about $23,000). Volkswagen categorizes it as a small, four-door all-electric crossover that resembles some design elements from its Golf Hatchback models. The underpinnings of the ID.Life EV Concept stem from a modified version of Volkswagen’s modular electric drive kit and features front-wheel drive only. Volkswagen intends on marketing the production-ready version of the ID.Life EV to young drivers and new car buyers.
The Future of Electric Urban Mobility
The CEO of Volkswagen, Ralf Brandstätter, is pushing an all-electric initiative that involves making electric mobility more accessible to the general public. The leading target group is young customers that desire a quality vehicle at an affordable price point. Eco-friendly vehicles are becoming more important to Volkswagen, and the company is currently implementing plans to gradually phase out gasoline engines while prioritizing the electrification of its entire vehicle lineup. Volkswagen has also pledged to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050 and aims to reduce carbon emissions per vehicle in Europe by 40% by 2030.
ID.Life EV Concept Specifications
The ID.Life EV Concept is already an impressive vehicle; its specifications are worth mentioning even in its pre-production phase. This small concept features approximately 250 miles of range provided by its 62 kWh battery and a 172kW electric motor that is powerful enough to launch the vehicle from 0-60mph in about 6.9 seconds. It’s not a sports car but designed more for fuel efficiency and practicality. Nevertheless, the concept has a maximum top speed of 112mph for those drivers that want to know how fast it can go. Volkswagen plans on offering the ID.Life EV has an entry-level electric vehicle, and therefore to keep the price point low, the vehicle will feature front-wheel drive only. The company also claims the ID.Life EV can receive about 100 miles of range within just 10 minutes of charging with a capable DC fast charger.
Use of Recyclable Materials and Other Features
The use of recycled materials is used extensively throughout the ID.Life EV Concept to showcase Volkswagen’s commitment to an eco-friendly future. The company claims its tires are partially made using vegetable oil and resins, recycled rubber, and silica from rice husks. Its roof is also removable and made out of “air chamber textile” (made from 100 percent recycled polyethylene terephthalate bottles). Some of its interior features include a projection screen that extends out of the dashboard, turning the inside of the vehicle into a mini cinema that is perfect for viewing movies and other types of connected media. Both rearview and exterior side-view mirrors are replaced with cameras that give the driver a better view of their surroundings while driving. Volkswagen claims that an available facial recognition system is embedded into the concept that allows owners exclusive access to the vehicle.
