Volkswagen ID. Models Receive First Batch of Over-the-Air Updates
Volkswagen announces its launch of over-the-air updates for each ID. model in its electric vehicle lineup. With the roll-out of new software, the automaker can improve a variety of different vehicle systems such as performance and infotainment. These updates are received via an internet connection and downloaded by the vehicle’s onboard computer. With the most up-to-date systems and features, consumers can be sure they are not missing out on anything new. Owners can manually select their available update(s) via the vehicle’s menu on the touchscreen display to start the download.Â
Working on Over-the-Air Updates
After working on updates for several months, Volkswagen made the updates available during Summer 2021. It rolled them out as part of the company’s ACCELERATE strategy, which involves tackling significant issues such as digitalization, new business models, and autonomous driving. CEO of Volkswagen, Ralf Brandstätter, says these over-the-air updates lays the foundation for a more personalized customer experience and new digital business models.Â
Software Release and Content
In technical terms, Volkswagen’s first over-the-air update is ID. Software 2.3 and arrives with new functions and improvements to a variety of vehicle features. For the driver, this is beneficial in several ways. Not only is technology updated, but the whole ownership experience improves as well.
Here is a list of the features included in the update package:
Light – At the bottom of the windscreen is a light strip that provides information that can offer support for energy-saving driving.
Improved Image Processing – The multifunction camera receives enhanced image processing capabilities to recognize motorcycles, pedestrians, and other vehicles on the road more clearly.
Dynamic headlight beam control – Adds more precise control over headlight beam function.
New graphics on infotainment display –  The center touchscreen display receives improved graphics for a clearer and more intuitive experience.Â
The Software Development
The team behind the development of the update package is Volkswagen and its software company, CARIAD. According to a Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development, Thomas Ulbrich, these new updates are critical to the functionality of a modern car for the digital age. Consumers can be sure this is not the only update Volkswagen is going to roll out. There are possibly more updates later on in the future. There is always room for improvement, and Volkswagen knows this very well. Especially for its ID models that will have high-tech features, periodic updates are necessary to ensure a fluid-running system.
