Volkswagen Golf GTI Awarded “Best Hatchback” by Good Housekeeping

June 9th, 2021 by

Volkswagen of America announced with its latest press release that the Good Housekeeping publication awarded the 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI the “Best Hatchback” honor on its “Best New Family Cars” awards. Working alongside experts from Car and Driver, the Good Housekeeping team evaluated a few hundred new vehicles, subsequently test-driving top contenders well over 5,000 miles via highways, busy city blocks, and sprawling landscapes.

“We’re honored that Good Housekeeping has recognized the Golf GTI as the sports car you can use as a family vehicle. The Golf GTI has built generations of fans by offering a unique balance of sportiness and practicality. The new 2022 Golf GTI is expected to arrive in dealers later this year, featuring more technology and power than its predecessors while preserving the affordable hot-hatch formula that launched the segment more than 40 years ago,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy for Volkswagen of America.

Speaking of “hot hatch,” the Golf embodies a classic formula: part style, power, refinement, and playful performance. 2022 marks the last year of production for this current Golf GTI generation and features new technology and ample design cues that extend its tradition of affordable performance, first established in 1983. The 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI comes in three trims — S, SE, and Autobahn. Entry-level Golf GTI S with a standard six-speed transmission has a starting MSRP of $28,695 (plus $995 destination fee), while the model with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission with Tiptronic starts at $29,495 (plus $995 destination fee). Further details, pricing, and fuel economy figures of the 2022 Golf GTI will be announced prior to its arrival in U.S. dealers.

The Good Housekeeping team worked alongside Car and Driver’s automotive experts to test and screen numerous models using a formula for determining the best vehicles. Safety, road manners, and technological features are all taken into account. Additionally, the team rated each vehicle on its usability for everyday family needs, such as points of entry/exit, usability, and child car-seat installation. Good Housekeeping referred to the 2021 Golf GTI as “a fun-to-drive car that’s responsive and athletic, a nimble hatchback that has good cargo space for its size.” The publication also noted that the 2022 model is set to deliver “even more power and sleekness than previous models on an already attractive build.”
