Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to launch next-generation Transporter in 2024

October 20th, 2023 by

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has announced that its next generation of Transporter will launch in 2024. This is good news for fans of the popular vehicle.

Next Generation Transporter

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) and Ford have a long-standing partnership, resulting in the upcoming VW Transporter sharing the same platform as the Ford Transit Custom, including the electric variant, E-Transit Custom. The new Transporter will be manufactured in Kocaeli, Turkey, and will be available in three different configurations, catering to various needs. It can be configured as a shuttle or minibus with up to nine seats for commercial passenger transport, an estate car with two rows of seats and a load compartment, or a classic delivery van with a large load area.

This partnership between VWCV and Ford dates back to when Herbert Diess and Jim Hackett were CEOs of VW and Ford, respectively. During their tenure, the two companies entered into an MEB cooperation for the Ford Explorer and another Ford model from Cologne, which both used MEB technology from Wolfsburg. They also explored a partnership between their respective light commercial vehicle divisions, which led to the VW Amarok using technology from the Ford Ranger, including a plug-in hybrid.

The upcoming VW Transporter will also share similarities with the Ford E-Transit Custom, bringing the two companies even closer together. This collaboration is a testament to the companies’ shared vision of delivering high-quality vehicles and services to their customers.

It is expected to share engines and gearboxes with the Ranger and Amarok. However, it’s important to note that just because they share these components doesn’t necessarily mean the lineups will be identical. Volkswagen will have the opportunity to evaluate the available options and decide which ones to take, ensuring that the Transporter stands out among its competitors.

Although Volkswagen has not confirmed its offerings for the Transporter, it’s possible to make educated guesses based on what Ford is offering. Ford has four options for diesel engines: 110hp, 136hp, 150hp, and 170hp. The T6.1 Transporter offered 90hp, 110hp, 150hp, and 204hp options before, so it’s reasonable to assume that the new version will offer something similar to Ford’s range of 2.0-liter diesel, even if not all of them.

When it comes to electric options, the Transit Custom has set the bar high with a maximum range of 236 miles. Therefore, it’s likely that VW will offer something very similar if it introduces an electric version of the Transporter. The Transit Custom also has two power outputs available so that VW would have a choice between a 134 horsepower and a 215 horsepower model. The introduction of an electric option would be a great addition to the Transporter lineup and would help Volkswagen compete with other brands in the market.
