Volkswagen Begins Production for the ID.7
Production of the highly anticipated Volkswagen ID.7, an all-electric sedan, has commenced at the automaker’s plant in Emden, Germany. The assembly marks a significant milestone for the German automaker as the ID.7 is the largest electric vehicle the company has produced thus far. Furthermore, the VW sedan is the second vehicle built on the automaker’s global MEB platform, following the release of the popular ID.4 electric SUV.
Assemblage of the Volkswagen ID.7 Begins
The Volkswagen ID lineup, which includes the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.6, is expanding with the addition of its first electric sedan, the ID.7. The electric sedan marks a historic moment for the automaker as it continues to prioritize sustainable and environmentally-friendly technologies. With the release of the ID.7, Volkswagen is further solidifying its commitment to producing electric vehicles that meet the needs of a wide range of drivers. According to the automaker’s social media account, VW “celebrated the symbolic start of production of the limousine at our #Emden plant.”
“The ID.7 is a top car from a top team. A big compliment to all our colleagues in Emden who have been so active in making the start of production a success. Thanks everyone for your commitment!”
-CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Thomas Shafer
The German automaker is making significant strides in the electric vehicle market, as it recently announced plans to launch ten new EV models from now until 2026. One of these models includes the ID.7, which is expected to be a popular choice among enthusiasts. Sustainability is important to VW, and the automaker is committed to creating eco-friendly vehicles that won’t break the bank. To that end, Volkswagen promised an entry-level model priced at less than 25,000 euros or $27,000.
In January 2023, VW gave fans and spectators a sneak peek at its new electric vehicle at the CES. The German automaker promised that the ID.7 would be a more robust and efficient flagship EV than any other MEB-based model released thus far. Volkswagen has certainly delivered on that promise. The ID.7 was officially unveiled in April 2023 and launched in critical global markets such as North America, Europe, and China.
The Birth of a New Era
The ID.7 will hit the streets as the Pro version, which boasts a 77 kWh battery that can provide an impressive range of up to 382 miles on a single charge. Later, VW plans to launch the ID.7 Pro S, which will come with an 86 kWh battery and can offer a range of up to 435 miles. Although the EPA range might be slightly lower when it reaches the US, the automaker still anticipates an impressive output of around 300 miles.
Volkswagen has referred to the ID.7 as its new “electric limousine,” designed to conquer road trips with long-range capabilities, a spacious interior, and revolutionary technology. The impending EV sedan will surely be an “efficiency champion” with its optimal aerodynamics and a new drive generation.
The ID.7 delivers a sleek and streamlined appearance, with a low front end, a smoothly transitioning bonnet, and a coupe-like roof. The rear end is tapered, contributing to its overall aerodynamic shape. The underbody is almost entirely closed, and new wheel spoilers and side air curtains are in place to help guide air with as little energy loss as possible.
European drivers will enjoy the ID.7 starting this fall of 2023, while North American customers will have to wait until 2024 for the electric sedan to cross the waters. Volkswagen has invested over one billion euros into the project and converted the site to accommodate the new electric era. Hopefully, this marks the beginning of more innovative and sustainable vehicles from the ingenious automaker.
