Volkswagen and Shell Partner Up for Flexpole Charging Stations
“With VW’s Elli Flexpole charging stations, we can make an important contribution to the necessary expansion of the charging infrastructure. And in locations where it would be otherwise difficult for fast charging. Shell is already one of the largest providers of charging infrastructure at home, at work, at on-street lamp posts and at our service stations. We want to do our part to enable customers to switch to electric vehicles and thus reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector.”
-Tobias Bahnsen, Head of Shell E-Mobility responsible for Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Exciting news from Shell Germany and Volkswagen Group! The tandem is teaming up to expand the charging infrastructure for electric mobility. The partnership thus far has rendered a 150 kW Elli Flexpole charging station into operation at a Shell service station in Göttingen, Germany. This charging station has a unique battery storage system that connects to a low-voltage grid, making installation and expansion faster and more flexible. However, be mindful that this is just the beginning! Shell and Volkswagen have plans to install the Flexpole charging station at other locations throughout Germany and Europe.
“The rapid expansion of the charging infrastructure is a prerequisite for the success of e-mobility. We contribute to this journey with our innovations such as the Elli Flexpole. It can be set up almost anywhere without major construction work, making it ideal for quickly setting up fast-charging options. We are pleased to have found a strong partner in Shell who, like us, wants to expand the charging network in Germany and across Europe.”
-Simon Löffler, Chief Commercial Officer at Elli
Shell’s Commitment to Germany
Developing diverse infrastructure for electric vehicles is an ambitious goal that has been underway for some time now. Shell set cornerstones a few years ago when it acquired NewMotion in 2017, Europe’s largest charging provider, now known as Shell Recharge Solutions. In 2019, fast charging stations (HPC) were built at Shell service stations, and by 2021, the Berlin-based startup Ubitricity was acquired. Ubiticity enables charging at lampposts on the street. Recently, SBRS GmbH, a leading provider of charging infrastructure solutions for commercial electric vehicles, was also acquired by Shell.
The first Shell Recharge fast charging stations opened in 2022 at the REWE and PENNY supermarket parking lots. In addition, Shell collaborates closely with IONITY to set up fast-charging stations along motorways in European countries. The petrochemical conglomerate aims to install over 500,000 charging points worldwide by 2025 and an impressive 2,500,000 by 2030.
Volkswagen Group’s Technology
The Volkswagen Group has set its sights on becoming the leading intelligent charging and energy ecosystem provider. The German automaker’s ambitious plan includes establishing a global network of 45,000 high-power charging points (HPC) with an impressive output of up to 350 kW by 2025. VW is well on its way to achieving its goal, having already connected approximately 15,000 fast-charging points to the grid with the help of its subsidiaries IONITY, Ewiva, and strategic partners BP and Iberdrola in Europe, Electrify America in the USA, and CAMS in China. In just a few short years, Volkswagen expects to have around 10,000 HPC charging points available in Europe alone and up to an astounding 25,000 worldwide by the end of 2023. We’re in the era of an exciting time for sustainable transportation, and the Volkswagen Group is leading the way!
