Three Volkswagen Vehicles Earn “Good” Safety Ratings

It’s the year of Volkswagen, and the 2021 and 2022 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and ID.4 EV solidify these sentiments. All three Volkswagen vehicles earned good ratings from the new side-impact test from Insurance Institute for Highway and Safety (IIHS). In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway and Safety observed 18 midsize SUVs, 10 of which earned good ratings, and three carried the Volkswagen logo.

One specific vehicle, in particular, the highly-anticipated ID.4 EV, was the only electric vehicle tested in the new side-impact test. Aside from being the only EV tested, the VW ID.4 was one of two vehicles to recieve a good rating in all areas of evaluation from the IIHS. The Insurance Institute for Highway and Safety’s side-impact evaluation comprised driver and rear passenger injury measurements, including head, neck, torso, pelvis, vehicle structure, and cage safety.

In 2003, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety created the side-test. The IIHS side-test was recently revised back in the fall of 2021. The reworked side test premieres enhanced technology that deploys a heavier barrier. The stockier barrier accelerates at faster speeds to stimulate the stricken vehicle. Furthermore, the new striking surface of the new barrier mimics the shape of a honeycomb that functions similar to a real SUV or pickup when struck by another vehicle. The latest improvements to the side test produce 82 percent more energy which imitates the size of the SUV and the wreck.

Like the initial test, the fall 2021 refresh assesses vehicles based on how well the occupant compartment preserves its shape during a casualty. In addition to the assessment, the side test collects injury measurements from the dummies arranged on the driver’s side. Furthermore, there’s a measurement of how the airbags deploy to protect the other two mannequin heads.

Any vehicle under inspection must maintain its shape throughout the collision to receive a good rating in the side test. Additionally, the mannequins measurements must also exhibit minimal to no risk of severe injuries. Moreover, the side airbags and seat belts must stop the dummy’s head from making a firm connection with the car’s interior.

The 2021 and 2022 Volkswagen Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and ID.4 averaged good scores across these areas of assestment.
