The wait is finally coming to an end as Volkswagen announced they’ve begun production on the ID.4 in Emden in Lower Saxony (the second manufacturing site for the ID.4 in Germany, following Zwickau. The news broke just a few days ago on May 20th, and in addition, once the Chattanooga plant in Tennessee joins the others this Fall 2022; the Volkswagen ID.4 will be in production at a total of five different plants across the globe.

Production Insights for the ID.4
The German Automaker has stated that production on the ID.4 has started right on schedule, with a maximum expected production rate of 800 ID.4s per day by the end of 2022. This could mean that buyers can expect to see about 4,000 units being produced per week and roughly between 15,000-20,000 units per year. Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter shared some thoughts on this expansion and accelerated production: “Rapid expansion of production capacities for our successful ID.4 model is a key component of our ACCELERATE strategy. It helps us accelerate the transformation to zero-carbon mobility and create further capacities to meet the high demand for electric vehicles. With our clear commitment to the site, we aim to show that cost-effectiveness and competitiveness are not only possible in the region, but that we can even enhance them lastingly.”

Volkswagen’s Electrification Plans and Further Expansion
Within the first quarter of 2022, Volkswagen was able to deliver over 30,000 ID.4s as the launch number reached 163,000. News from the press release also states that as of May 20th, 2022, there are currently about 73,000 orders for the ID.4 that have been placed globally, making this the German Automaker’s most successful electric vehicle to date. Volkswagen is truly pushing forward with its plans and promise for electrification by adding more plants and sites to further produce the MEB-based all-electric vehicles. This expansion is expected to reach at least 1.2 million MEB-based all-electric vehicles by the end of this year. The expected investment in the Lower Saxony area by 2026 will continue as Volkswagen plans to turn it into Germany’s center for electric mobility. Production on other electric vehicles will begin to take place later this year as well in Hanover, where the ID. Buzz is set to begin its production.
