Volkswagen announced its plans to produce a new electric version of the Golf hatchback in Wolfsburg, Germany. Although a specific timeline has yet to be disclosed, VW previously stated that the Golf will be one of several EVs based on its next-generation dedicated EV platform, SSP. SSP is the successor to the German automaker’s current range of electric vehicles on the MEB platform.

SSP is designed to serve as a successor to the MEB platform that underpins VW’s ID.4 and ID.Buzz, as well as the upcoming ID.7 sedan. In addition, it will also replace the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), which the German automakers have yet to introduce. The Porsche Macan Electric will be the first car to feature the PPE platform, with other Porsche and Audi models to follow. Furthermore, the Macan Electric will hit the market in 2024.

VW’s new SSP platform will reportedly debut in a new model called Project Trinity (P3), P3 will debut around 2026. The SSP platform will feature a unified prismatic cell strategy and may include solid-state technology. Following the release of Project Trinity, the electric Golf may act as a flagship model to showcase the new technology. In an April (2023) interview, VW brand boss Thomas Schaefer stated that the automaker has no desire to release new gasoline and diesel versions of the Golf. Instead, the internal combustion models will retire with a new EV bearing to reinvigorate the Golf name, anticipated for 2028.

Volkswagen had produced over 100,000 e-Golf hatchbacks, which shared a platform with gasoline and diesel seventh-generation Golf models. However, Thomas Schaefer’s comments suggest that this new electric Golf will be the only version to bear the nameplate in the future.

It is worth noting that the upcoming Golf-like ID.2all model differs from the electric Golf. The ID.2all will be based on a variant of the MEB platform called MEB Entry and is expected to arrive in Europe in 2025. The compact hatchback will have low production costs and sticker prices. However, the German automaker hinted that it might bring the ID.2all to the U.S. with a sporty twist. As suggested by the ID.GTI Concept revealed recently (September 2023).
