The 2024 Volkswagen ID.5 Gets Practical Upgrades
The Volkswagen ID.5 offers a promising preview of the practical upgrades that will soon be within reach in the United States. Following initial supply challenges, the ID.4 has been a standout performer, with nearly 16,500 units sold in the first half of the year, representing over 10 percent of the brand’s total sales volume.
The 2024 Volkswagen ID.5
The Volkswagen ID.5 is an elegant and sporty pseudo-coupe that complements the ID.4 with a lower roofline. Although it is currently unavailable in the United States, both models have received significant updates. In particular, the Euro-spec GTX version of ID.5 is similar to the ID.4 S Plus, and the improvements are not immediately visible. However, they are significant and lie beneath the surface. One of the most noteworthy updates is that the ID.4 and ID.5 now have a more robust rear motor. In the US, this motor is exclusively paired with the larger 77.0-kWh battery, while the less powerful 58.0-kWh battery still employs the older motor.Â
The new motor, identified as AP550, will also be used in the forthcoming ID.7 sedan. The updated motor features a revised rotor and an improved cooling system that enhances its output and enables it to handle high loads with ease. In the rear-wheel-drive 77.0-kWh ID.4, this new motor delivers an impressive 282 horsepower. Meanwhile, in Europe, the all-wheel-drive version boasts an even more impressive 335 horsepower, and we anticipate the US version will have comparable output. These updates elevate the driving experience of the ID.4 and ID.5 to new heights, making them even more appealing for enthusiasts and casual drivers alike.
Although Volkswagen has refrained from publishing official range claims, the company anticipates that the new motor will substantially enhance EPA numbers for both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive automobiles. It is imperative to note that the said motor will be equipped with cutting-edge technology that is poised to revolutionize the automobile industry.
The ID model’s cabin has undergone significant improvements, especially in its user interface. One of the most notable upgrades is found in the 77.0-kWh variant’s infotainment system, which now features a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen with higher resolution. The updated software has also been enhanced with intuitive shortcut icons placed conveniently at the top of the screen, making it easier to switch between different functions.
Despite the system’s sleeker and more functional design, it still shares the same space above the touch-sensitive control panel for temperature and audio volume, which can sometimes result in accidental activation. Volkswagen has addressed previous criticisms by illuminating the climate control, making it more visible at night, and improving the overall accessibility of the forward/reverse selector, which has been relocated to the steering column. This change has eliminated the slightly awkward previous location of the selector on the side of the gauge cluster.
The new user interface is a significant improvement over its predecessor, offering greater convenience and accessibility to drivers while addressing some of the previous criticisms. The sensibleness of ID.4 and ID.5 would be suited for all tasks.
