The 2020 Volkswagen Arteon is Deemed a Top Safety Pick by IIHS

September 14th, 2020 by

Good news is in order for the 2002 Volkswagen Arteon as it was just named a Top Safety Pick byt the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when outfitted with LED headlights and the brand’s Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS). A Top Safety Pick designation is the highest honor vehicles can earn from IIHS. To qualify for the award, vehicles must earn good ratings in each of the Institute’s numerous crashworthiness evaluations. Vehicles must also have good headlights and automated available crash prevention technology to earn either advanced or superior ratings. The 2020 Arteon not only earned good ratings in the six crashworthiness evaluations required by the IIHS, the model also earned a superior rating thanks to its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention tech — Front Assist.

Volkswagen’s Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist) comes standard on the 2020 Arteon. The advanced technology is designed to warn drivers of potential collisions with vehicles and pedestrians in front of the vehicle, while in some cases even providing automatic emergency braking assistance should the driver not respond accordingly to the alerts. Warnings are not only acoustic, but visual as well since a warning symbol flashes in the instrument cluster if the car is moving faster than 18 mph. Additionally, there’s also an automatic jolt of the brakes to warn the driver as well. If all else fails and the driver does not emit a response, the Autonomous Emergency Braking system is thus activated and helps to slow the vehicle. Should the driver press on the brake pedal and that pressure is too light, the Braking Support system will make sure the brake pressure is increased automatically.

Not only does the 2020 Arteon offer Front Assist, other driver assistance features offered on this model include: standard Rear Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor, and an available Lane Keeping System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Steering Assistant, Overhead View Camera, and High Beam Control. The Arteon was designed to mesh both passive and active safety systems (including a total of eight airbags) for top-tier safety while on the road. The airbags are located on the front, side, and knee for front passengers, while side curtain airbags round out the protection for outboard seating positions.

Volkswagen offers the 2020 Arteon in four trims: SE, SEL, SEL R0Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. Pricing starts at $35,995 for front-wheel-drive Arteon vehicles and $37,895 for all-wheel drive (plus destination fee). IIHS initially launched its front crash prevention program back in 2013 to help consumers understand the available technologies and hone in on the systems it determines to be most effective.
