In May of this year (2022), Volkswagen officially announced plans to revive the iconic Scout in the form of an all-new electric pickup and a rugged SUV in the United States. This announcement surprised many people, including the Volkswagen U.S. dealers, who then asked for clarification on whether or not the automotive giant would adopt a direct sales model for the brand-new, independent company that will be called Scout Motors. The German automaker has not said much about this, but its intentions with the new brand are heartfelt. This is something enthusiasts can see through the appointment of the former North American boss Scott Keogh as the president and CEO of this new unit.

The Scout: A Glimpse into the Future

  • Early Details Revealed:

Volkswagen has shared limited information, including design sketches and confirmation of an all-electric platform specifically developed for the Scout.

Regarding the Scout automobile, Volkswagen has been doing everything to keep things under wraps. The automaker has only released two design sketches and small bits of information about it being an all-electric pickup and SUV, with the vehicles being manufactured, designed, and engineered for the United States. The original announcement of the Scout mentioned that “the electrified Scout brand will be built upon a new technical platform concept which brings new pickup and R-SUV (rugged SUV) credibility beyond the existing Volkswagen Group portfolio.”

  • Early Prototypes Impress:

Insights from a vintage Scout enthusiast reveal a commitment to authenticity and a focus on off-road capability.

Jeff Bade, a well-known member of the vintage International Harvester Scout community on Facebook, wrote that he was invited to an event where he was allowed to speak with engineers and designers involved in the Scout’s revival and even examined early prototypes. Though understandably, he cannot share videos or photos, he mentioned that the team is committed to staying as true to the original Scout as possible since the vehicle’s history is essential to enthusiasts anticipating this resurrection. He spoke about the Scout being developed on new platforms different from those used in other VW electric vehicles explicitly designed for the Scout EVs.

  • Affordability and Customization:

Key priorities for Scout Motors include ensuring the vehicles are budget-friendly and easily customizable by owners.

Bade emphasized that it’s crucial to developers that the vehicle be affordable and capable for buyers. There are no price estimates yet since the Scout is in the early stages of development. Bade added that Scout Motor’s developers want to allow owners to customize and work on their vehicles even after they purchase them. There’s a lot to look forward to with the Scout, so stay tuned for more updates when they come along!
