New Information Has been Released for Upcoming VW EV Vehicles
Volkswagen has released new insight about its plans to create its electric vehicles.
Production Decisions
In the interview with the German publication Automobilwoche, Schäfer confirmed the primary goal that the Volkswagen brand wants to sell only battery-electric vehicles in Europe. The ID. Golf and ID. Tiguan is looking like it will have production in Wolfsburg. The Trinity model will also be manufactured there; it looks like the Trinity will not be making an appearance until 2028 as well as the electric Golf.
The electric Golf needs the Scalable Systems Platform with the “Golf genes” to be in the vehicle, says Schäfer. The car will have a similar roof to the ID.3, but the difference is that it will be flatter. The ID.3 has a friendly appearance, with its headlights providing the compact electric model with a familiar human face. There is no information yet on if the electric Golf will have any other features that resemble the ID.3.
The Tiguan could make its debut in 2026. “With a tall model like the Tiguan, that’s already possible. We can do that very well with the MEB+ platform. We are much more flexible. Whether it makes sense to do it now or later, we’ll have to see,” Schäfer is quoted as saying. Schäfer is also now releasing the exact location of the Trinity production. “That depends on how much space there is at the main plant. If the construction of internal combustion vehicles has been scaled down as far as we expect by then, then we will probably have enough space there and can integrate the vehicle into the plant. If not, we will have to build anew,” said the brand boss. “In 2026, that certainly wouldn’t have worked. In 2028 it could work according to the current forecast.” The company plans to make a decision this year.
Volkswagen is planning on producing something other than a Golf 9. The current Golf 8 will undergo a significant product upgrade, a new design for next year. Even before the Golf 8 facelift, the new Passat and Tiguan will be unveiled this year, with the Tayron and the successor to the T-Roc will arrive later in 2025. The plan is that the T-Roc will be the last new Volkswagen combustion engine vehicle in Europe. They plan to continue upgrading their combustion engine vehicles, but the T-Roc will be the final new automobile product.
Schäfer had recently promised another small electric car below the ID.2all, but as things stand, he has also recognized that creating one right now will not be possible. He stated, “As of today, such an electric car is not yet feasible in terms of price at the current battery and raw material costs. It would be nice if we could achieve this in this decade. The sooner, the better. But we’re not there yet.”
New upgrades and electric vehicles are on the horizon for Volkswagen. This further information opens a lot of doors and possibilities that the company will be able to take. As decisions are made, Volkswagen will keep letting its consumers know what is ahead.
