More Changes Underway for Volkswagen EVs
As Volkswagen Group’s previous CEO Herbert Diess makes room for a new legacy, Oliver Blume prepares for a substantial overhaul. As such, back in November (2022), a report from Germany disclosed that VW will put the 2026 Project Trinity Flagship EV and the new Wolfsburg plant for its SSP-based models on the back burner.
Many enthusiasts have speculated that the German automaker may only progress with the Project Trinity factory in 2030. Nevertheless, if the project comes to a standstill, it would translate into a tremendous delay. However, the latest reports disclose that Volkswagen will come up with a conclusion for the new factory by February 2023.
The project suspension may suggest that VW is slowing its rhythm in the electric vehicle segment. However, it also indicates that the German automaker may be on the brink of more financially efficient procedures, conceivably a new MEB platform.
In fact, in a recent statement, VW revealed improvements for the MEB platform. The MEB+ is a heightened spin-off of the MEB that will take the EV design to an uncharted level.
While Volkswagen’s MEB+ implies additional perks, the automaker describes the platform as the next era of MEB. In addition to the platform evolution, VW was heavily invested in developing the e-platform to the moon. As a result, creating the MEB+ will also provide better charging and storage capacities. Moreover, the improved platform will energize the electric vehicles’ digital infrastructure and nurture a path for a breakthrough in automated driving procedures.
Most importantly, the MEB+ will engage Volkswagen’s next generation of batteries, the prismatic cell. Additionally, the prismatic unified cell facilitates 435 miles of driving range and substantially enhances charging periods. VW noted that charging speeds may advance to 175 to 200 kW compared to the MEB’s 135 kW.
Progressing to MEB+ will allow the automaker to expand its electric vehicle lineup extensively. As a matter of fact, the German automaker plans to premiere ten new EVs by 2026. Additionally, Volkswagen said it would add new all-electric to its premium and performance segment. Nonetheless, there must be strong confidence about when the MEB+ will make its grand debut.
Volkswagen’s MEB platform was initially launched in 2019 for the ID.3. Currently, the platform supports over 670,000 vehicles, including over 500,000 Volkswagen electric cars. Furthermore, over a dozen vehicle models from Audi, Cupra, Skoda, Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles employ the MEB platform.
