After going on a 6,700-mile cross-country road trip from New York to Sacramento, Volkswagen’s ID.4 EV Crossover is still hungry for another challenge, and this time it is going to show off its racing ability in one of the most famous racing events in the world, in the 2021 NORRA Mexican 1000 race. The week-long event runs from April 23 to April 30 and features multiple checkpoints and will span from Ensenada to San Felipe, Mexico. Volkswagen engineers wanted to put their EV Crossover through another test that will display the EV’s capabilities in a racing environment. VW appointed RHYS Millen Racing to modify the ID.4 EV to racing specifications and has assigned professional driver Tanner Foust to race to the finish line.

The NORRA Mexican 1000

A video of Tanner Foust driving the modified VW ID.4 EV Crossover can be seen here. The 2021 NORRA Mexican 1000 will cover 1,141 miles in total and will span the entire Mexican Baja Peninsula which will give ample distance for the ID.4 EV to showcase its racing capabilities. Since the ID.4 EV is all-electric, charging it during the entire duration of the race is important and that is why the ID.4 will carry a 50-kW portable fast charger that will run on biofuel.

Volkswagen’s Racing Heritage

Volkswagen has a rich racing history in the NORRA Mexican 1000. VW’s first event in 1967 was won in a Meyers Manx Dune Buggy that was based on the iconic VW Beetle.

Modifying the ID.4

Modifications for the ID.4 EV include a custom off-road suspension and a racing interior with a roll cage for protection. According to VW, the EV’s powertrain and its 82-kWh battery will remain stock. Its horsepower numbers will also remain the same, with 201hp, which is the same as how a customer would buy it from a dealership. But the components in the drivetrain do have additional protection to shield it from road debris.

Unnecessary components were also stripped from the vehicle to make space for more race-oriented elements like racing seats and digital data screens to show battery temperature. Its suspension configuration has been modified with rally-style coilovers, and tubular control arms in the front. The stock 19-inch wheels were removed in favor of off-road capable 18-inch wheels for more sidewall that gave the ID.4 two more inches of ride height.
