Is the Volkswagen GTI Trademark Transitioning into a New Segment?
The Volkswagen GTI and R performance-focused models will transition into the electric segment and what appears to be a seamless shift. A new trademark implies that a prospective design of the GTI may be underway.
The new VW GTI emblem features GT letters which stand for Grand Tourer, but the I is no longer, what once was an I for injection is now a lightning bolt. Many enthusiasts speculate that this filing could relate to electrification, but no official information has been released yet. Nonetheless, the design suggests something exciting is brewing from the innovative automaker.
The German Patent and Trade Mark Office received the filing for the Lighting GTI on July 25, 2023. However, rumors further suggest that the Polo GTI will be discontinued, but the Golf GTI will attain a mid-lifecycle update. Exciting times are in the making for Volkswagen enthusiasts!
Volkswagen has a specific naming system for its various models. The naming process is dependent on its power source. For example, the German automaker employs the GTD moniker for diesels powered engines, the GTE for PHEV or plug-in hybrids, and the GTX for all-electric models. Although the well-known GTI badge is specific to petrol-only models it appears that change is inevitable. Moreover, VW vehicles with the R badge rating are higher-performance models that transition to electric-only by 2030.
In 2022, the Volkswagen Golf and GTI names were recognized as timeless staples for the car maker by CEO Thomas Schäfer. The VW CEO expressed the importance of maintaining the Golf and GTI name’s legacy and not letting them die out in vain. Additionally, there are also rumors swirling around that the German automaker may discontinue the GTX and replace it with the GTI, which explains why the Jetta maker is in search of a new emblem that can be used for its electrified powertrain models.
There are rumors about a potential fully electric hot hatch concept based on the ID.2all concept. Although no official confirmation yet, if it turns out to be true, Volkswagen should be a plausible contender for the new badge, and this might make Tesla head back to the drawing board.
