Introducing the Powerful 2022 Volkswagen Golf R

November 28th, 2020 by

Volkswagen continues to expand its performance halo, this time with the unveiling of its 2022 Volkswagen Golf R model. The vehicle offers enthusiasts 315 horsepower coupled with 310 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive technology, the 2022 Golf R can go from 0 to 62 mph in only 4.7 seconds and boasts a top track speed of 155 mph. The model is slated to arrive stateside in the middle of 2021 for the 2022 model year.

Volkswagen has been consistent throughout the model’s generations by having all-wheel-drive as the standard, along with customized design and other exclusive sporty accents and equipment. The exterior of the upcoming Volkswagen Golf R features a new front bumper that includes a motorsport-style splitter accented with R-exclusive air intake grilles and gloss black elements. Atop the radiator grille, the Golf R also has a blue crossbar which illuminates as an LED light strip as soon as the engine comes to life. The crossbar LED lights act as daytime running lights as well.

Like the outgoing generation of Golf vehicles, the R model is a five-door affair. In the U.S., the Golf R features a standard sunroof. Other distinctive features on the 2022 Golf R include 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, summer performance tires, matte chrome exterior mirror caps, a .8-inch lower stance than the standard Golf production model, and exclusive side skirts. For a nice touch, Volkswagen left blue brake calipers somewhat exposed so the R logo peeks through the 19-inch wheels. An additional unique design element is the rear bumper, which integrates a new high-gloss black diffuser framed by chrome-plated twin tailpipes. There’s even a roof spoiler to ensure the rear axle has enough downforce.

The 2022 Golf R is available in three different colors — Lapiz Blue Metallic is the signature shade for the vehicle, but it’ll also come in Pure White or Deep Black Pearl Effect. As for the interior of the model, Volkswagen has modernized many of the displays and controls along with the improved Discover Pro infotainment system which now boasts a 10-inch display.

In addition, the cabin has also been enhanced with Nappa leather seating, carbon-look elements with blue accents, complete with a blue R logo on the backrest. The steering wheel is special as well, with its ergonomic design, multifunction settings, shift paddles, blue contrast stitching, and an R button to help drivers select from several driving profiles. Additionally, a forceful press of the R  button instantly activates the Race profile. Other standard interior cabin features include a carbon look dash panel theme, R-specific door trims, 30-color ambient lighting for the dashboard panel and doors, and brushed stainless-steel pedal caps and driver footrest.
