Volkswagen has plenty to celebrate these days as the German automaker recently debuted its upcoming ID.7 model at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The automaker gave enthusiasts their first look at the brand’s first all-electric global sedan. Although the sedan was camouflaged, the ID.7 certainly held the audience captive at CES 2023. Perhaps the best and most eye-catching detail of the ID.7 had nothing to do with aesthetic design, and everything to do with its rumored range–435 miles on a single charge!

Details about the upcoming electric Volkswagen sedan are basically nonexistent. Volkswagen is keeping specs such as battery size, power, and even charging  speeds under wraps as it awaits the debut of the production version of the ID.7. The automaker scheduled the global sedan’s big debut for sometime during the second quarter of 2023. That being said, lack of detail hasn’t necessarily stopped professionals and enthusiasts alike from speculating about the future ID.7.

Given that the ID.7 rides on the same modular electric drive (MEB) as some of the automaker’s other electric vehicles, the upcoming model will use a 400-volt architecture and is capable of accepting up to 170 kW of energy to recharge the battery. At a minimum we know the ID.7 will meet or even exceed current charging expectations. Currently, Volkswagen is in the throes of producing the American-made ID.4 model, that with its83 kWh battery offers buyers a maximum range of 275 miles to the tune of 295 horsepower when in the all-wheel drive configuration.

To achieve the ID.7’s confirmed 435-mile range, Volkswagen very likely relied on a larger battery pack. Some industry insiders claim the ID.7 is powered by an impressive 105 kWh battery unit instead. Aesthetic design choices are also being kept hush hush by the automaker as it only featured a camouflaged version at CES. Some revealing spy shots do hint at some unconventional design choices, but nothing is concrete until Volkswagen does its big ID.7 reveal sometime in the spring (2023).

The interior of the ID.7 model is another story altogether as it has already been revealed. Experts deem the internal changes a welcome improvement over some of the very first prototypes offered in the ID lineup. Buyers can expect illuminated touch sliders for climate and volume controls, for example. Additionally, Volkswagen even overhauled the air conditioner, switching to Smart Air Vents which can be controlled via the 15-inch infotainment screen and can even be directed to blow air toward seats that are currently occupied. Another useful upgrade is the augmented reality head-up display (HUD), which not only displays the current speed and speed limit, but also now gives the driver smart prompts directly from the navigation system.

The Volkswagen ID.7 is Volkswagen’s second electric model headed towards the global stage,  after the existing ID.4. Sales are expected to start by the end of 2023 across Europe and North America.
