2023 Volkswagen Tiguan Buying Guide
Volkswagen and its enthusiasts waited on bated breath for the automaker to finally enter the SUV segment here in the U.S. Comfortable due to the success of the Beetle, Golf, Bus, and Jetta, the automaker saw no reason to test the waters when it came to SUVs. However, once the SUV market showed no signs of stopping, Volkswagen stepped up to the plate and delivered the Touareg in the early 2000s. Geared towards a luxurious customer base, the Volkswagen Touareg struggled to find its footing, but by 2009 the Tiguan model was on the scene–the brand’s first mass-market compact crossover offering. As sales rose, the Volkswagen Tiguan became (and remains) one of America’s most successful SUVs.
2023 Volkswagen Tiguan
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan continues to shine 15 years after its initial launch. Refreshed for the 2018 model year, the Volkswagen Tiguan changed course when it switched from German production to U.S.-based manufacturing and assembly, thus effectively lowering the model’s overall cost. Having changed tracks, the Volkswagen Tiguan quickly became a best-seller once it was no longer relatively expensive. A captivating and attractive crossover, the Volkswagen Tiguan keeps a close eye on the competition. The biggest change when the generation refresh happened in 2018 was the addition of new headlights, a new front fascia, and a new front grille design as well. Some of the high-tier trim levels also feature a light bar that hugs the entire width of the grille. While the rest of the exterior design remains unchanged, the 2023 Tiguan features new alloy wheel designs and trim-exclusive ones on the SE R-Line trim–a part of Volkswagen’s performance-oriented lineup.
Available in four different trim levels– S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line–the Tiguan continues to battle it out in an extremely competitive SUV segment. Some of its direct competition comes from the likes of the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4, and others. Beneath the hood of every 2023 VW Tiguan, regardless of trim, lies the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Buyers can expect their Tiguan to make 184 horsepower and up to 221 lb-ft of torque. With a 0-60 mph time of about eight seconds, the 2023 Tiguan doesn’t shy away from standard SUV performance figures. When it comes to fuel efficiency, the 2023 Tiguan is EPA-rated at 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway on the front-wheel drive version, while the all-wheel drive scores a little lower at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
On the interior, the Tiguan also experienced several updates throughout the years. For the 2023 model year, the Tiguan features an updated infotainment system and an updated digital gauge cluster screen. Buyers can also expect updated climate controls with intuitive slides while foregoing the conventional dials and buttons. Additionally, high-tier trims also offer buyers the attractive Noisette upholstery package. An area in which the Tiguan outshines its competitors is its standard three-row seating. Heated seats also come standard, as does keyless entry and start. Optional upgrades on the 2023 Tiguan include ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, an automatic power liftgate, and a Fender sound system.Â
