2021 Top Safety Pick+ for the Volkswagen ID.4

An honor bestowed upon the best of the best, the Top Safety Pick+ award requires a good rating in the six crash-worthy evaluations. Ultimately, The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ensures all participating vehicles maintain suitable or adequate headlights and available front crash prevention earning advanced or superior ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian assessments. 

The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 received an acceptable rating for its standard LED headlights, a good rating for the optional premium LED projector headlights, and a good rating in six crashworthiness evaluations. In addition, the standard feature for all four ID.4 trims is the Front Assist system, receiving a rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. 

Another standard feature for the electric vehicle is IQ.DRIVE, advanced driver assistance along with hands-on semi-automated abilities. Off the streets on the interstate, the IQ.DRIVE  provides lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel, giving the driver more control over the electric powerhouse. Once the driver is off the interstate and back on the streets, the IQ.DRIVE stays on the alert for surprises in front and around the vehicle to avert any disasters. 

A fully safety-equipped ID.4 provides a front radar, front camera, two rear radars, and eight ultrasound sensors. These systems communicate with one another to enable Travel assist (semi-automated driver assistance), Front Assist (Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring), Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop & Go, Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System), and Emergency Assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency). But wait, there’s more! On top of the IQ.DRIVE, the ID.4 also includes Dynamic Road Sign Display, Park Distance Control, and Light Assist (High Beam Control for Headlights).  

Starting price for the ID.4 commences at $39,995* (not including destination fees) MSRP for rear-wheel drive and $43,675* for all-wheel-drive. The 2021 ID.4 comes in four different trims Pro, Pro S, AWD Pro, and AWD Pro S, with the addition of the 1st edition released exclusively for the launch. Every ID.4 model offers an 82 kWh battery, a rear-mounted AC permanent magnet synchronous motor and 201 horsepower, and 228 lb-feet of torque. 

All-wheel-drive trims feature an extra motor with 107 horsepower and 119 lb-ft of torque, generating a maximum output of 295 horsepower. The EPA estimated range is 260 MPGe for rear-wheel-drive Pro models, 250 MPGe for RWD Pro S, 249 MPGe for the AWD Pro, and 240 miles for the AWD Pro S.
